There are 83 universities in Canada that are independent post-secondary education institutions with authority to grant degrees.

Many of the largest cities in Canada have several universities each. Montreal, Quebec has the most universities for any Canadian city with seven. Halifax, Nova Scotia has six and both Toronto, Ontario and Metro Vancouver have five. Ottawa, the nation's capital has 3 unversities. The oldest university in Canada is the Université Laval" , which was established in 1663.
